Edible forest gardens are a self maintaining edible eco system based on the layers of a forest. By exchanging your ornamentals for an edible or useful plant you can create your own “Garden of Eden.”
Once established, the inputs and labour reduces as the production increases allowing time to enjoy the benefits. The natural diversity of the garden helps to increase the beneficial organisms particularly in the soil, which aids the self fertilizing nature of the system. As a result the water holding capacity of the soil is also increased. By focusing on the soil the overall stability of the system is increased improving the health and well being of the plants.
The principals of this system can be applied equally to a planter box, courtyard, and suburban garden or to a large scale property.
The Edible Forest garden can be a formal style or an informal style. The design is up to you to suit you and your needs. The aim is to have a beautiful productive garden that feeds the body and the soul.
